There are moments when we need to step outside of time.
Not literally, of course, but to create a little space where we aren’t rushing toward the next responsibility, answering the next message, thinking about what needs to be done, or trying to figure out what comes next.
A moment where we can simply stop.
When we create this kind of sacred space for ourselves, something begins to open.
It becomes a space where we can listen—not only to what is happening around us, but to what is happening within us.
This is one of the things I love about art.
Art can create a channel between the seen and the unseen. It gives us a way to explore our emotions without having to explain them or defend them. We can have a conversation with ourselves through color, texture, shape and movement.
We can ask:
How am I really feeling?
What am I longing for?
What am I ready to release?
What am I wanting to create in my life?
What am I wanting to create in the world?
We don’t always have easy answers to these questions.
There are so many emotions moving through us all the time. Sometimes they become so loud that we have difficulty hearing our own inner compass—our North.
We get caught up in the day-to-day.
Responsibilities. Work. Family. Relationships. Bills. Social media. The news.
I try to stay away from the news as much as possible. Not because I don’t care about what is happening in the world. I care very deeply. But I have learned that I can only take it in small doses.
There is so much happening around us that sometimes we need to consciously create a little space to hear ourselves again.
Tilling the Soil Within
I think of art as a way of tending to our inner garden.
We can till the soil.
We can pull out what no longer belongs there.
We can plant seeds.
We can water them with intention.
And we can weave hope, love and support into the process.
When I create intuitively, I am not always thinking about what the finished painting is going to look like. I am interested in what happens while I am creating.
There is something powerful about moving the medium.
As the brush moves across the canvas, I am physically participating in my own contemplation. I’m not just thinking about what I feel. I’m moving it.
The colors, textures and shapes become part of the conversation.
Something that was inside of me becomes visible.
And sometimes that allows me to see something I couldn’t see before.
When Color Speaks
There are times during an art journey when a color will come into my mind before I know why.
Sometimes I feel drawn toward a particular color without understanding it.
I love allowing myself to follow that feeling.
Color can carry so much emotional meaning for us. Different colors can evoke different memories, sensations, moods and feelings. They can remind us of places, people, seasons, experiences or something we can’t quite name.
For me, there is also a spiritual dimension to this.
I experience color as frequency and vibration, and I enjoy exploring what different colors awaken within me.
Whether you understand this spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, or simply as the natural language of color, the experience is still worth exploring.
We see the color.
We respond to it.
We feel something.
And suddenly our inner dialogue has become something we can actually see.
Creating With Intention
You can begin an art practice with an intention.
Maybe your intention is to heal.
Maybe it is to understand yourself.
Maybe it is to invite more joy into your life.
Maybe you want to release something.
Maybe you want to reconnect with your creativity.
Or maybe you simply want to feel good.
You can even set an intention to raise your frequency and invite more joy into your life, connecting with the guides, people, experiences and sources of support that encourage you to live fully.
You don’t have to know exactly how you’re going to get there.
You can simply begin.
That is one of the beautiful things about intuitive art.
The act of creating becomes part of the journey.
Your Creativity Can Become a Companion
Maybe one art journey changes something for you.
Maybe it takes several.
Maybe the painting you create becomes something you return to years later.
Or maybe the experience simply opens a door.
You might find yourself wanting to make collages.
You might start taking photographs.
You might begin painting regularly.
You might discover meditation.
You might become more curious about nature.
You might start journaling.
You might find yourself listening more carefully to your dreams or your intuition.
The art doesn’t have to be the destination.
It can be the doorway.
And that is what I love most about this work.
I don’t believe we always need someone else to tell us what our path is.
Sometimes we need a quiet enough space to hear ourselves.
Sometimes we need a tool that helps us listen.
Sometimes we need someone to hold that space while we discover what is already within us.
Art can be one of those tools.
It can become a companion as we move through our lives—a way to check in with ourselves, express what we can’t put into words, explore our emotions, reconnect with joy, and remember what we want to create.
Learning to Heal Through Creation
For me, this is what art as medicine means.
It isn’t about creating a perfect painting.
It isn’t about being an artist.
And it isn’t about someone else interpreting your experience for you.
It is about learning how to use creativity as a tool for connection.
A tool for presence.
A tool for listening.
A tool for exploring your own inner world.
And perhaps, over time, a tool for learning how to become your own inner healer.
You may discover that the wisdom you were looking for wasn’t somewhere outside of you.
You just needed a little space to hear it.
So take a moment.
Step outside of time.
Pick up a brush.
Choose a color.
Make a mark.
And see what wants to come through.
You don’t have to know where the journey is going.
You only have to be willing to begin.
A Journey Through Art
If you’re curious about exploring this for yourself, I invite you to experience an Art Journey with me.
In these journeys, I guide you through a multi-layered intuitive art process that gives you space to slow down, listen inward, and explore what is ready to emerge.
Layer by layer, we work with intention, color, texture and imagery to explore your inner landscape. We can connect with purpose, move through resistance, release what is no longer serving us, and create space for what wants to come next.
I call these paintings portals because they can become markers between one phase of life and another.
Sometimes we are standing at the edge of a change and don’t quite know how to step through.
Sometimes we know exactly what we need to leave behind but aren’t sure what we’re moving toward.
And sometimes we simply need a place to begin.
Through the painting process, we create a visual reminder of that transition—a piece of art that can continue to speak to you long after the journey is over.
You don’t need to be an artist. You don’t need to know what you’re going to paint.
You just need to be willing to explore.
If you’d like to experience an Art Medicine Journey, reach out to me and let’s create a journey together. I offer individual and group experiences, and we can create a theme around the transition, intention, or season of life you’re moving through.
